WOW this was difficult to do! The customer wanted her three girls as the grinch who stole Christmas, max the dog and Cindy Lou who. I didn't get much else direction. Which is how I like it.
I chose this scene because
1. All three characters were together in this scene and
2. I found an original chuck jones still from the movie and finally
3. I prefer to show the change of heart not the grinch being mean. Kids are going to hang this in their room and look at it daily. I want it to be a positive experience.
Anyway like I was saying this was a difficult project because I wanted to retain the girls likeness while at the same time portraying the character recognizably. This was especially true of the grinch. Anthropomorphizing people is probably the most difficult thing about my job.
The color was especially tricky. Should I make the girl green? Flesh colored? Or flesh with green highlights? Ultimately I chose the last option in order to retain more of the girls likeness. I was trying to think of what she would like and if I were a teenaged girl I would still want to be pretty! I do remember the days.
One interesting thing I wanted to say was I learned a few interesting things about dr Seuss as I researched for this piece. I wanted the background to reflect his art style. As I drew I realized he must have been a speed artist, like me! The steps he always draws were definitely drawn in a hurry. And then I wondered - did he maybe also have ADHD like me?
Anyhow here it is. Hope you like it! All told this took maybe ten hours.
If you’d like me to do a commission for you I am currently open for them! I only do these around Christmas and in my off season so take advantage now!
