This is such a cute story.
The other day I was drawing caricatures at Beau Rivage casino in Biloxi for the Farm Bureau Federation (thanks Dedre!)
I looked up for my next customer and it was Miss Mississippi!
Crown, sash and all.
I was stunned silent for a moment. Next to her sat a pretty little girl about age 9 or 10 whom I had drawn earlier as a mermaid.
I regained my composure, introduced myself as I always do, and started drawing.
The wheels in my head turning, I tried to figure out this situation. Why was a little girl getting drawn with a runner up for Miss America? Who, by the way, was as charming and friendly as she was beautiful. She quickly put me at ease.
After a moment, I asked the little girl if Miss Mississippi was her sister. She shook her head no.
Puzzled, I said “Then how do you know each other?”
Becky, Miss Mississippi, said, “I’ve only known her for about an hour.”
Aha! Now I understood. I said, “Does this happen a lot?”
“All the time,” said Becky with a smile.
“So,” I turned to the little girl, whose name escapes me, and said, “Maybe you’ll grow up to be in the pageant too, huh?” She smiled a shy little smile and I knew that’s what this was all about.
I was finishing up the drawing now.
As an afterthought, I put a crown on the little girls head and a sash on her that said “Future Miss Mississippi.” And I said to the girl, “You hang this up in your house and look at it and it will help you get there.” She nodded.
I finished up, did the big reveal at the end like I always do and they both loved it.
Then I tore off the page and handed it to the little girl.
Who promptly turned to Miss Mississippi and handed it to her. “You keep it.”
“Are you sure?!?” Was Miss Mississippi’s surprised reply.
“Why?”
”To remember me by.”
Awwwww ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
