Gone with the Wind Wedding

I am drawing caricatures at my first wedding of the year. I’m not drawing them yet though. I’m just arriving. Parking my truck. Hoping I don’t get towed.
It is Saturday January 18th 2025
I've been hired to draw my complimentary caricatures for Cameron and Patrick Bolton at their beautiful reception at Ezell house in Mobile, AL which looks like it came straight out of Gone with the Wind.
Thankfully they couldn’t have ordered better weather. It is balmy and beautiful. Maybe 70 degrees. This, folks, is why I live and work on the gulf coast.

I love Ezell house so much I go around taking pictures before the guests arrive. Period cobblestones, a carriage house that’s been converted into a bar, and the inside of the house, though not as huge, reminds me of the time I visited Versailles. Of course on a much smaller scale.

Floor to ceiling drapes, ornate fireplace, period paintings, chandeliers and a grand staircase all make this house feel like I am in a wedding from Gone with the Wind. I can practically hear the swish of their big hoop skirts.
The yard has a lovely fountain as the centerpiece and is just big enough for a tented area with a DJ dance floor and seating for maybe 50.
I’d say this venue would work well for about 100 people but this wedding was more intimate. Just close friends and family - and me.
I’m the entertainment for the evening. I’d better get started.
I bring my rolling cart up the ramp - a nice modern convenience that still manages to look like it was an original part of the house - and begin setting up my easel in a corner. The planner, Toni, brings me some chairs.
Then, I wait. And while I wait, I decide to explore the place and take some pictures.
Finally the cathedral bells down the block begin chiming. The guests begin arriving.
I stand at my easel, hold my marker, and smile as I greet each one.
The first couple decides to get drawn and I’m off to a flying start.
I feel like I become friends with this eclectic little group as I draw them, one by one, couple by couple. This is always the case, but I think more so with this wedding since there are about 40 people present, which is perfect.
I overhear one of the groomsmen say “Why share the most important day of your life with strangers?” I Couldn’t agree more.
Because it is smaller and more intimate, I can really take my time and get to know the guests. Which I just love.
I draw them all with the exception of their grandpa who did NOT want to get drawn. Ok grandpa. I’m not going to force you.
Funny story about grandpa- two young folks had driven him All the way down from Michigan to the wedding because he was scared to fly! 15 hours I think she said.
Which shows their love and dedication. I would not want to ride 15 hours in a car with anyone. But they wanted to make sure grandpa didn’t miss his granddaughter’s wedding. ❤️
I am drawing everyone and I fleetingly worry if I needed to put a parking pass on my dashboard or something and worry if I’m going to get towed.
But then Mom and dad of the bride (who are the ones who hired me) sit for a drawing and my truck is forgotten.
They share their love story with me as I draw them and I think it’s sweet. So I’m going to Share it here. I hope I don’t get any details wrong.
So these two were married twice - both times to each other! They had what they called a “blip” in their marriage and were actually divorced for a few years. But they’ve been together now some 40 years. They couldn’t agree on how long 🤣
When they decided to get remarried, they got their caricature drawn. It was dated and said “Just Married.”
They hung it up and waited.
Their kids all eventually saw it and thought it was funny til they got a closer look.
“Just married! Wait- look at the date! What?!?”
And that’s how they told their kids they had gotten remarried! I can only imagine the joy in that room ❤️
And that’s why they hired me to draw caricatures for their daughter’s wedding. Caricatures are important to them personally and they knew how much fun they could be.
So they hired me ❤️
