Once Upon A Time
I’m drawing caricatures at a Wedding in Eclectic, Alabama and The Bride and Groom are MISSING.
Jennifer the MOB comes by to check on me and I mention that the couple only has half an hour left before I’m done drawing.
Jennifer assures me they’ll be with me soon, they're just busy doing all the wedding things.
“Don’t forget that special surprise for them," she says with a wink.
I smile. "I’m ready," I say.
A Disney Fairytale Wedding
This couple has an unofficial and unconventional wedding theme.
It seems that on their first date they saw a Disney film that really resonated with them. The theme of the Film is “Anyone can be a hero."
It’s one of the few Disney wedding themes I’ve never done before: Disney’s Hercules
So Jennifer, the MOB, has hired me as the wedding caricature artist to draw the couple as Hercules and Meg.
Talk about a memorable theme!
I can’t wait. I also can’t wait to meet these two in person at long last.

The night wears on. I draw nearly all of the people there.
But the Bride and Groom are so busy doing all of the wedding things.
I am concerned: Are they going to have time to get their Wedding Caricature drawn before they have to make their big exit?

“I’ve always wanted a Caricature," says the Groom's sister. "But I never had the chance to get one before."
"Me too," says one of the brothers of the groom.
I laugh. "I hear this all the time," I tell them. "That’s what makes my wedding caricatures so special. Well one of them anyway."

I am getting more and more nervous though. Where are the bride and groom???
I tear off the paper and show them their caricature. They are all Laughing and having a great time. I gather them up to take their picture.

The bride and groom have arrived!
It's a little like having a Celebrity sit in my chair. I am struck mute for a moment. Wow she looks so beautiful!
They sit down and I breathe a sigh of relief.
They made it!

An Intimate Moment
I take a breath and compose myself.
Smile and introduce myself, shaking hands like I always do, and give the bride and groom instructions to help them relax.
"All you have to do is look at me. You don’t have to smile yet, I'll tell you when. In the meantime just be yourselves," I say, and they both breathe a sigh of relief. I start drawing them.
"I thought Id have to smile the whole time," says the bride.
"Yeah that woudn't be much fun. Can you imagine?" I grimace like someone who's smiled for too long and they both laugh.
While I draw, I chitchat. Most artists just sit there mute but I think that's boring. People want to form a connection. This is one small thing that I do differently than other wedding caricature artist that makes a big difference.
I complement the bride on her choice of music, which I genuinely love because it’s vintage music like Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong.
Very Eclectic. Just my style. Perfect for the Eclectic venue too.
"Thank you," the bride says modestly, "I picked the playlist myself."
"With a little help from me," says the groom.
"Of course, sweetie," she says, patting his face playfully. Then she says to me,
"We wanted music everyone of all ages could enjoy."

I nod. Very thoughtful. Very Intentional.
I like these two. They’re such a sweet couple. So innocent. So in love.
So hopeful.
As I draw them, my heart swells with joy.

THIS is why I love drawing caricatures at weddings. My faith is always renewed whenever I attend one. They never fail to give me hope for the future.

A Big Surprise
It’s time to add the Hercules and Meg bodies, but some of the couple's friends from out of town come over and greet the bride and groom so they need to get up.
I act fast, quickly tilting the caricature I'm working on towards me so that the surprise isn’t spoiled. I use the time to sneak a peek at the reference photo I'm using.
Finally they sit back down and I can start the Hercules and Meg bodies.
"Im so sorry!" says the bride.
"Not a problem," I say, "That happens all the time." I start adding the cartoon bodies.
The bride and groom still have no clue.
I think the reason Jennifer hired me in the first place was because I told her I could draw the couple as their rather eclectic wedding theme of Hercules and Meg.
I told her I can draw wedding caricatures with pretty much any wedding theme you can think of. And I ENJOY doing it. It's a fun challenge for me.
So I do it! I make them into Hercules and Megara riding on Pegasus. And I'm pretty pleased with how it turns out. Doing the hair was a bit of a challenge but I managed. I start coloring it in.

We've drawn a crowd now (pun not intended) and the couple is getting a little nervous. So am I. I really hope no one spoils the surprise!
"Why are y'all laughing?" the bride asks her friends and family. "Y'all are making me nervous!"
"Theyre laughing AT you, not WITH you," I joke, and she laughs.
"Actually it's really cute," one of their friends says. I thank them.
I finish up the color and now it’s ready.
By the Grace of God I managed to keep
it a surprise that whole time.
Will they like it?
"Are you ready?" I ask.
They eagerly say yes, their expressions full of
excitement and a little trepidation.
